HOW TO PREPARE FOR A FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT
Booking a photoshoot can be a very exciting time for families! Photoshoots tend to bring all the kids and parents together, and often times the experience at the photoshoot is just as magical as the images themselves. I've photographed many families over the years, and I first hand how much fun it can be.
On the flipside, I also know how daunting it could be. If a family does not know how to prepare for a photoshoot properly, a fun time could turn into a complete mess! An occasion that's meant to bring others together, could ultimately bring people apart if they aren't careful! Well, this is why I am here. This blog is intended to help families properly prepare for a photoshoot so that both the families and the photographer can walk away from the session on a high note!
HOW TO PREPARE FOR A FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT
From one photographer to the next, there could be several different tips on how to properly prepare for a photoshoot. Some tips vary in complexity, and can leave families even more confused! Well, I am going to keep it real simple here! I have just four tips that can help any family have a photo session that can run flawlessly!
TIP #1: Select Clothes with Purpose
If a friend or family member comes over to your house, and they glance at all of the family pictures on the wall, one of the first things they will subconsciously notice is how unified the family is. One major component the helps express a families unity and connectivity is something very simple. The clothes! I know, you are probably thinking, how in the world can that be? Well its simple.
If you look at the military branch, police officers, or even athletes, their uniforms show that they are all connected and on one accord. The same things applies to family photoshoot. If everyone is dressed in a specific theme, with a specific purpose, the overall images will show that everyone is connected and unified. So have purpose when you select the outfits for the family. Is your family vibrant and full of energy? Well maybe a bright red or green theme an work! Is the family more laid back and serious? Maybe darker colors can work to help bring a dramatic mood! Pick your outfits carefully, because their impact is greater than you might imagine.
TIP #2: Bring Props and Snacks
Props in a photoshoot is similar to having accessories to your outfit. Yes I know, the dress or suit you purchase looks SHARP! REAL SHARP! But don't you think it would help if you have a nice necklace, earrings, or a classic watch to go with that awesome outfit? Same thing for props! Props will turn a good portrait into an AMAZING one. They bring a sense of authenticity to your portrait session! You can get the kids evolved with a bubble machine, you can a snowman in the background of your Christmas session, you can even stop the babies from crying if they have their favorite teddy bear. Props will help bring out the personality of any family! So don't go to another photoshoot without any props in hand! You will thank me later!
TIP #3: Be Silly and Have Fun
This is the most important tip of them all. HAVE FUN! Families book photoshoots because they want to have memories they can cherish forever. Often times their minds go straight to the final images they'll receive, and they may unintentionally miss out on a perfect opportunity to actually create memories during the actual shoot! So take this time to have crazy fun! Get on the floor, jump to the sky, slide down a slide! Do things you've never done before. Or even things you may not have done since you were a child. The goal is to be silly and have fun. Families will always be able to point at a picture and reflect on it, but if you are able to share a backstory with how you captured the picture, that is were the money is!!!! Have fun guys!!!
